Gold Coast Butterflies Butterfly House, Carrara Markets
Little minds are mesmerised by brightly coloured, tiny fluttering wings, so what better place for a little outing than the Gold Coast Butterflies Butterfly House at Carrara Markets.
At the Gold Coast Butterflies Butterfly House you can spend time learning about the plants that provide natural habitats for butterflies and caterpillars, wander around the greenhouse spotting butterflies and even get up close and personal with the different life stages of the butterfly – egg, larva, pupa and adult.
There were a couple of other families there when we visited, mostly with primary school aged children and they were absolutely enthralled with the butterfly facts and could be heard shouting out whenever they found another butterfly hidden away in a flower or vine.
The day we visited was rainy, and we found out that cool, rainy weather makes the butterflies a little sleepy and quiet. Most of the butterflies were resting on flowers or leaves when we arrived, but as the day warmed up a little and the rain outside stopped a few of the more adventurous butterflies started to flit around the room. There is also a stand covered in fruit which is a regular favourite for the hungry butterflies.
As you leave the enclosure you can also see a range of pinned butterflies, including some that are over 100 years old. It is quite an impressive collection and it is amazing to see how many different varieties and colours of butterflies that exist. It was a really lovely outing for our little family. You don’t need a lot of time there depending on age range of your children and the level of interest! We were there for about an hour.
