Mount Ngungun summit walking track, Glass House Mountains National Park
The iconic Glass House Mountains are a cluster of thirteen rocky peaks that rise abruptly from the coastal plain on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Only an hour north from Brisbane, the rugged outcrops are actually remnants of volcanic activity that occurred more than 25 million years ago.
The Mount Ngungun summit walking track (pronounced ‘noo noo’ but generally known as “Gun Gun”) is a 2.8 kilometre trail that begins in open forest and offers great 360 degree panoramic views of the coast and hinterland at the top!
Parents beware and take care as the track passes close to cliff edges, children do need to be closely supervised at the top as there is no hand railing. There’s also steep rocky stone stairs in some parts and i imagine slippery when it’s been wet weather.
The hike took our family (kids aged 10, 7 & 4 years old) over an hour return, we made lots of stops to view bugs, look out for birdlife, search for bats in a cave and with no luck spot a koala in the eucalyptus trees. I recommend taking plenty of water, wear supportive shoes, hat and sun screen. There is a water tap to refill drink bottles at the car park and no toilets.
Definitely one attraction to visit on your next family stay at the Sunshine Coast.
